A gift being presented to His Holiness Patriarch Alexis

The second All-Russian exhibition “The Orthodox Russia” with the blessing of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexis II started its work at the Moscow exhibition center “Guest yard”. It is timed to coincide with the summer anniversary of the first All-Russian exhibition of monastery works and church plate which took place in February-April of 1904 in Saint Petersburg. Some 30 out of more than 40 monasteries are participating in the exhibition, as well as all synodal establishments, temples, educational institutions, art workshops, pilgrim services, orthodox publishing houses – more than 200 participants in all.

For us, sisters of the Novo-Tikhvin monastery, participation in the exhibition is particularly symbolic. 100 years back during the first All-Russian exhibition held at the Tavrichesky Palace our cloister got the first award for the embroidered works of sisters.

Embroidered icon oh the Holy Trinity

This year it is 10 years since the date of the cloister revival. Gradually the life of the monastery is getting better, a sewing and an icon-painting workshops have already been recreated. Like 100 years ago our sisters sew canonical dress and religious habit. There’s a special trend as well – embroidering icons, Liturgical suits, Holy Shrouds, priestly vestments. Sisters are in all respects loyal to the Orthodox traditions with the only exception – now they use up-to-date technologies.

At the exhibition

On the day of the exhibition opening we were honored with the presence of His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexis II, the Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa Peter VII, plenipotentiary of the president in the Central federal district George Poltavchenko, plenipotentiary of the president in the Volga district Sergey Kirienko, mayor of Moscow Yury Luzhkov and other persons of high rank..

His Holiness the Patriarch Alexis was presented an embroidered Liturgical set (paten and chalice veils “Deisis” and ear “Laying in the Tomb”), the Patriarch Peter – icon “The Trinity”, Sergey Kirienko – icon “The Savior on the Sudarium”, and George Poltavchenko and Yury Luzhkov – embroidered icons of St. George the Victorious.
