The Bishop’s Vestments

The bishop’s vestments

The other day the sisters of our sewing workshop accomplished the work on the embroidered bishop’s vestments. It is the first experience for our monastery as earlier, within more than five years, only vestments for priests and deacons were made at the workshop. This new festive attire is made of white silk with an ornament of gold and colour threads. It is composed of saccos, great and small omophorion, epitrachelion, palitza, liturgical cuffs, sulok and girdle. Previously to their getting to work the sisters thoroughly prepared for the order. They looked through many pre-revolutionary books on an embroidery, studied the Old Byzantine and baroque styles of ornaments, consulted the sisters from the icon-painting workshop. According to sister Salome, who was engaged in creation of a pattern, the preference was given to eclecticism, that is to mixture of several styles. The choice of colour for vegetable ornament of the bishop’s vestments was made by the sisters-programmers of the sewing workshop. We hope, in the near future the monastery will be able to start mass production of bishop’s vestments.
